District News

Updated Wed, Sep 2nd

Starting today, September 3rd, Campbell Union School District (CUSD) families will be able to pick up five breakfasts, lunches and suppers at no charge, thanks to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s extension of the summer meal program. The extension allows summer meal program operators, like CUSD, to continue serving free meals to ALL children, 18 years and younger, through December 18th.

By offering five days worth of meals, families will only need to come once a week to the  Drive-up/Walk-up Meal service locations. The change is intended to be more convenient for families as our students continue distance learning and our community abides the COVID-19 pandemic.

Families can pick up meals at any of these distribution locations, Monday through Friday, at the following times:

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.:  Blackford, Capri, Castlemont, Lynhaven, Rosemary, Sherman Oaks
  • 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.:  Monroe Middle School: 2-3:30p

***NOTE: Meal pick-up will no longer be at CSI or Rolling Hills Middle School***

Please visit our website at www.campbellusd.org/food for meal applications, menus and the most up to date information about meal times and locations."

Governor Newsom announced California’s new blueprint for reducing COVID-19 in the state and the revised criteria for loosening and tightening restrictions on reopening activities. The new California Department of Public Health’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy replaces the previous State Monitoring List, and includes guidance for schools that aligns with State law directing public schools to "offer in-person instruction to the greatest extent possible." (Ed. Code § 43504).

Based on recent data, each county will fall into one of four colored tiers—Purple (Widespread), Red (Substantial), Orange (Moderate) and Yellow (Minimal)—based on how prevalent COVID-19 is in each county and the extent of community spread. That color will indicate how sectors can operate.

The blueprint lays out the measures that each county must meet, based on indicators that capture disease burden, testing, and health equity, and it reaffirms the July 17 School Re-opening Framework and the Guidance for Small Cohorts/Groups of Children and Youth for reopening schools for in-person instruction. Because individual counties may be more restrictive than the State’s plan, our District leadership will monitor local directives and conditions closely before initiating any progression from Phase 1 to Phase 2 of our Reopening Plan.

Student safety is our top priority, which is why we have systems in place to protect users from any misuses/abuses while using the District's information services. We ask that parents and family members partner with us by reminding your student to keep usernames and passwords private, even from friends, to not share Zoom links with others, and only use their own school-assigned online account.

Together, we can prevent breaches of the Technology Use Agreement and reinforce with students the proper protocols/etiquette when using the District’s electronic information platforms. We also ask that students report any inappropriate content, security problem, or misuse of services to the teacher, principal, or parent as soon as they become aware. See our handbook online at: www.campbellusd.org/docs/parent-handbook

“Connecting with the students filled our souls. They are why we chose this profession!”

boy first day of kindergartenThat statement from a school principal sums up reports from our school staff about the first day of classes on Monday.

Despite a bumpy start with Zoom’s system errors, the day was filled with animated teachers, smiling students, and an easing of stress as teachers and students began the school year together in distance learning.

Here, we are sharing a few of the over 300 first-day photos we received from proud parents. We’ll share others throughout the coming weeks. collage of smiling students

Families and staff are asking for help with finding school-day supervision for their children when distance learning begins on August 24th. We have had some luck with reaching out to local businesses and city officials to identify options and will share them as they become available.

Here’s a start:

  • Our District CampbellCare program will operate at several locations, from 2:30 until 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. This video shows our systems for social distancing and staying safe. Details about the program, waiting list, and registration are online.
  • room arrangmentSutton Swim School ‘Distance Learning Support Camps’ will begin August 24, 2020 for students in grades 1-5. Three days per week. The camps will be in three-week blocks. Phone 408-996-9800, email info [at] suttonswim.com, or  register online.
  • The City of San Jose is coordinating a process with several school districts for providing some school-day supervision for students at some of its community centers and libraries. Details are still being developed, and we will provide information to you when we have it.

Because we know of this need, we will continue reaching out and communicating with city, church and business partners to find more support for families who need daytime supervision for their students.

To provide more time for ensuring a good start to the school year, we made some minor modifications to our 2020-21 calendar.
Students' first day of school is now Monday, August 24th.

The calendar is available online as a google calendar or to download as a PDF.

We moved some teacher professional development days—originally scheduled during the school year— to the beginning of the school year. All other scheduled dates, such as holidays and the last day of school, remain the same. We appreciate the collaborative effort with our labor groups to make these adjustments possible.

Schools Will Send More Details

Your child's school will send schedules and information for picking up equipment or instructional materials, and other information to help your child prepare for the school year. Please check the school’s home page and watch your email for updates.

At the July 29 virtual meeting, Campbell Union School District Superintendent Shelly Viramontez addressed questions sent in advance from families about the School Reopening Plan. It was simulcast in Spanish and a recording of the session is posted online.

Due to an error by Zoom.com, the attendance capacity was limited and about 150 people were unable to log in.

“We had planned for 1000 person capacity, so the limit was frustrating to us and to our families,” Viramontez said. “Fortunately, we did record it and will make it available right away.”

More than 900 people were able to listen in—500 in English and more than 400 in Spanish—to hear responses to questions centered around the topics of Distance Learning, the Hybrid phases and scheduling, safety measures, special education, child care, meals, and transportation.

The recording in English is on the district’s YouTube channel (). Spanish subtitles will be added before the end of the week.

Updated Wed, Jul 29th

Today, Campbell Union School District released its detailed 2020-21 School Reopening Plan, with descriptions of how schools will phase in from remote learning to the traditional all on-campus model over time. It also provides sample schedules for distance and in-person learning, safety measures for students and staff, and an overview of the planning process.

“Throughout the process, our top priority is the health and well-being of our students, staff, and families as we continue our work of educating students to their highest potential,” said Superintendent Shelly Viramontez.

Review the Plan

The detailed report is available now, in English, on the district’s COVID-19 web page. A Spanish version will be added on Mon., July 27th

Attend one of the virtual community meetings about the plan. (Links available on the District’s public meetings calendar.)

  • 6 - 7 pm on Wed., July 29th (English, with Spanish interpretation)
  • 6 - 7:30 pm on Thu. July 30th (Spanish interpretation provided)  (Updated 7/29)

To submit questions after you review the plan, please use this online form.

Distance Learning

The plan calls for beginning the school year with all students in Distance Learning and gradually moving to in-person learning as conditions allow. There also is an option for families who prefer to enroll their students in Distance Learning for the entire school year.

Starting Monday afternoon, July 27th, families who wish to opt in to the full-year Distance Learning program, will receive an access code by email which they may use with the "Distance Learning" link our Enrollment web page. (Available the afternoon of July 27.) The deadline to enroll in the full-year Distance Learning option is 4 p.m. August 3rd.

Afternoon Campbell Care

While current restrictions prevent opening classrooms for daily instruction, they do allow for childcare with physical distancing. The district child care program will follow all Public Health Department requirements.

Campbell Care will be available, beginning Mon., Aug. 24th, from 2:30 p.m. until 6:00 pm, for 5 days per week. The cost is $614 per student per month. The rate will be adjusted to $399 for the “short months” of August and December, and there is a 10% discount for siblings and district staff.

The number of sites offering this program will be determined by enrollment numbers. Families who have already paid a registration deposit for childcare will receive a separate communication from the Expanded Learning Department about their priority placement.

Registration is open to all CUSD-enrolled families. Click to register.

Special Thanks

“We owe a special thanks to the parents, employees and students who worked with us, answered our surveys and helped us define a plan even as public health guidelines frequently changed,” Viramontez said. “I’m pleased that we have created a plan that allows us to be safe, nimble and responsive to local conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
