Dear Parents,

We want to make you aware of what seems to be the latest viral challenge targeting children. It is called the Momo Challenge, and it centers around a disturbing character suggesting dangerous tasks for kids to perform. From what we have learned, these and other suggestions can also be found spliced into some YouTube Kids videos, including Fortnite and Peppa the Pig. This challenge also occurs through an app called WhatsApp, which could function on both phones and tablets.

We recommend that you talk to your child about these kinds of challenges, in a way that you feel is appropriate for their understanding. Given the connection and concern with messages within YouTube Kids videos, we also recommend that you monitor what your child is watching and screen the videos, even if they appear to be safe, to ensure their viewing does not include harmful messages.

The links below offer some information about the Internet hoax and resources to help you set rules at home:

In our schools, we are aware of this trending issue and continue working to ensure students follow safe Internet use. Throughout the school year, our teachers reinforce the expectations for safe use and responsible practices described in our Student Digital Safety contracts.  They also use the Common Sense Media resources and our lesson bank to teach grade-specific digital citizenship lessons.

If you have any further questions, please contact your child’s school.

As students become more comfortable about walking or riding bikes between school and home, we want to be sure they stay alert and safe. Please talk to your child about how to stay safe while traveling to and from school.

Some suggested reminders are:

1.    If possible, don’t walk or ride alone.

2.    Stay aware of your surroundings. Watch where you’re going and what is happening around you.

3.    Tell someone where you are going and when you will return.

4.    Use cross walks and obey traffic signals.

5.    Avoid strangers, and tell an adult right away if any suspicious people approach you.

Thank you for being our partner in student safety.

Learning about the world's "Mighty Decomposers" came to life as Living Classroom brought an engaging lesson to students at Rosemary School this week.

The Living Classroom gardening/outdoor education program is working with students in several of our elementary schools inspiring them to learn about and value the natural world through garden-based education.

They're always on the lookout for volunteers--docents to help lead gardening lessons, green thumbs to help tend our school gardens, and community friends who just want to come out, lend a hand and help support this wonderful program.

We know that many families want to plan summer vacations that won't conflict with the start of school. Although the full 2019-20 school year calendar is not yet official, we have determined that students will start school during the week of August 19, 2019. The exact date within that week will be determined by Governing Board action at next month's meeting, on March 7th.

As you plan ahead, please bear in mind that our schools also schedule middle school orientations and kindergarten "round ups" in the days preceding the start of school.

Once the school calendar is official, we will post key dates on our online calendars, websites, and on campus bulletin boards.

Showing both leadership and compassion, the students in Monroe's Leadership class made the arrangements to bring music, smiles and conversation to the residents of Caring Hearts senior care home this week.
"My committee had to find a place nearby that would like support from students," said eighth grader Valerie M. Pictured above. "We searched online for some place close, and I phoned the manager of Caring Hearts. We worked out ways we could be supportive, and scheduled our visit with them."

"Teaching the value of giving back to the community is important to us at Monroe," said Principal Gilbert Rodriguez. "At Monroe, Leadership students gain more than gratification from helping others. They also learn how to plan and coordinate events and activities, how to identify resources they need, and how to communicate and interact with diverse groups of people. They really represent our school well."

Untreated dental problems can cause intense pain and adversely affect nutrition, growth, and ability to pay attention in class. This week, in observance of National Children's Dental Health Month, teams of volunteer dentists and their assistants are providing free dental screenings to more than 1,000 students in our schools. It is part of a nation-wide program that aims to identify dental problems early, educate children about good dental hygiene, and help to connect families to dental care if they need it.

Nurses at Campbell Union School District's schools will follow up with the families of children found to have serious dental issues. Those who do not have regular dentists will receive assistance in getting dental care through the Dental Society volunteers.

"We want to help catch dental problems early," says Dr. Zarkesh, President of the Santa Clara County Dental Society, pictured here providing a dental screening to a student. "And it's fun being with the kids."

The Dental Society coordinates the local event. This month, they will provide free oral assessments for more than 5,000 students county wide.
