Rosemary Scholar Lenny Gonzalez-Salazar attended the board meeting on December 10 and led the Pledge of Allegiance to open the meeting.  He also spoke briefly about his experience on the field trip to eBay earlier in the day.  "First, we worked with a partner to write code for about an hour," Lenny said.  "Then they gave us a little tour and we went to the cafeteria for lunch.  I ate pasta.   We got to meet eBay workers.  I want to work there some day."

A workshop put on by the Santa Clara University Community Law Center at the Rosemary Family Learning Center last week attracted nearly 40 people.  Attendees heard important information about their rights as renters in our community.  Many people shared personal stories of injustices that they have experienced.  The next workshop in February will focus on consumer rights issues.

Saturday, December 5, parents joined Coach Malika, Mr. Schmaedick, CUSD staff and an eager team of volunteers from the Campbell Methodist Church for our School Garden Kick-off celebration.  Everyone had a chance to plant their own seeds in a pot to take home and to share ideas for what we should plant in the school garden.

Volunteer Joe Liverseed announced the Church's commitment to the success of the garden and shared that the congregation was donating $2,000 to cover start up costs.  "This is your garden," he stated, "It will only be successful in the long run if the community steps up to make it happen."

District Garden Coordinator Tony Kienitz said, "This is a beautiful space.  In time it will become a peaceful oasis on the campus, a place where parents and students will want to visit often."

Join us for our next garden work party on January 9, from 10-1.

The messages at the morning launch this month are all on the topic of respect.  "Be Respectful" is one of the school-wide expectations at Rosemary and these days Mr. Schmaedick is reminding us that we respect not only what we value, but we respect all people and all things.  Respect is not conditional!  At Rosemary we don't say, "I will respect you if . . ."  We don't only respect our friends.  We don't only respect people we know.  We don't only respect those who treat us right.  We respect everyone!

Respectful means that I don't fight!  I treat all people and all things right!

Three cheers for the book fair!  The Scholastic Book Fair finished with a five-day total of over $4,500 in sales.  Thanks to all who took the time and made the investment in books.  It is great to know that so many books have been purchased for our students' homes.  in addition Scholastic donates a large portion of the sales to the school.  At Rosemary, we use the proceeds to add to our school library.  This year the library has been able to purchase over  $2200 in books as a result of this sale.

Campbell School District staff had the chance to attend the open house for the new district central kitchen last week.  It is a very impressive facility that will completely transform the quality of meals we serve at our schools.  I look forward to the

meal program becoming a point of pride for the district rather than the area of concern that it has been traditionally in many schools.  After sampling some of the menu items, I expect that the school meals will become a legitimate option for staff as well as students.  The new kitchen will begin production some time in January.

students and parents walk to school

Walking is a fun and healthy way to spend time with your child.

In Campbell Union School District, we encourage parents and students to walk or bike to school every Wednesday. For those who live too far, try parking farther away from the school and walking the last block or two.

Since children learn by doing, YOU are your child’s most important role model for learning to walk safely. As you walk, please:

  • Obey all traffic signs and signals.
  • Look LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT for moving cars, and cross when clear.
  • Time yourself. Practice this weekend to find out how much time to allow.
  • Check the weather and dress appropriately (boots, rain coat, umbrella, etc.).

As you walk, you can talk with your child about what you’re doing and explain why.

A Message from the Superintendent

Parents often ask me: “When will I find out the results of my child’s tests?”

Each year our teachers administer several assessments to determine student growth and inform their classroom teaching practice. These assessments—tests, quizzes, class projects, and the like—provide multiple ways to measure student progress towards learning the important concepts they need for success in school and in the community at-large.

Our assessment cycle includes dates we report results throughout the year. Also, our teachers are available to discuss student progress with the parents.

Assessment Reporting Schedule

iReady Testing Results

  • October at Parent-Teacher Conferences
  • Mid-November via student delivery
  • Early March via student delivery

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Distribution Cycle

  • Tentatively August/September 2016 via U.S. mail

Trimester Report Cards

  • Middle School (sent via U.S. mail): Nov. 19, March 10, June 9
  • Elementary School (sent home with student): Nov. 20, March 18, June 8

Campbell Union School District employees value partnering with you to prepare our students for college and career success. Please continue to communicate with your child’s teacher(s) to stay informed and to ensure that we are all doing our best to provide each student with an optimal educational experience.
